As a huge fan of homemade cleaning products, I love when I can come up with my own DIY recipes to replace items that I used to buy at the store.
I’m sure most people can relate to growing up with Pledge being in regular use. I know my mom used it all the time, and it genuinely worked great. Our furniture always looked good and was free of dust. However, since becoming more naturally minded, I gave up using Pledge years ago.
Follow along and I’ll show you why I stopped using Pledge, how to make your own dusting spray, and the benefits that come along with making your own DIY cleaners.
Why I Stopped Using Pledge

As much as I love having a clean, orderly, and dust-free home, I equally love having good health 😊. In the past, I assumed all the conventional cleaning products like Lysol, Windex, Dawn, and Pledge were just a necessary part of life. I never thought twice about them.
However, as I’ve learned more about synthetic chemicals and the effects they can have not just on us, but our environment as a whole, I have wanted to steer clear of conventional cleaners as much as possible.
Pledge is one of those products that I gave up in pursuit of greater health. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “Pledge Dust & Allergen Furniture Spray, Outdoor Fresh” is rated as a “D”, which is only one level away from the worst rating that the EWG issues for cleaning products.
The ingredients of concern are dimethicone, dimethyl siloxanes and silicones, fragrance, butane, isobutane, propane, isoparaffin, alkanes, c7-10-iso-, and sorbitan oleate. Fragrance is enough for me these days to put a product down and walk away, let alone the other concerning ingredients.

Do Homemade Cleaning Products Actually Work?

Absolutely! I have been extremely satisfied with my DIY household cleaners over the years.
The first area where I made the switch from conventional to natural was laundry. Initially, I began purchasing a very basic natural liquid laundry detergent from a local farmer’s market. I was happy with the product, and it was actually a good price, but I decided to try making my own.
That is how I came up with my powder laundry detergent recipe and my liquid laundry detergent recipe. Since then, I have also developed 3 different recipes for homemade fabric softener. I have been very pleased with how all of these DIY products perform!
After having success in the laundry department, I moved onto general household cleaning. I cut ties with my Lysol all-purpose cleaner and made my own all-purpose cleaner with vinegar. Distilled white vinegar works great for natural cleaning! I also started using Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap and made another version of an all-purpose cleaner, but without vinegar.
One of my all-time favorite homemade cleaning products is my streak-free glass and window cleaner. All of my DIY cleaners work great, but this glass and window cleaner works especially great. I love having perfectly clean and clear mirrors when I walk through my home. It’s a little detail that I enjoy!
Of course, this is all personal testimony of my own products, BUT if you gave these DIY recipes a shot, I think you’d see what I mean 😉.
Benefits of DIY Cleaners

As much as I love finding low-tox options online, and especially in stores, there’s something to be said about knowing how to make something for yourself. Here are some of the benefits of making DIY cleaners for your home:
- Ingredient control
- You know the ingredients actually going into it
- Reduced toxin exposure
- Easily avoid chemicals you want to stay away from
- Customize to suit personal preferences
- Fragrance or no fragrance, it’s up to you!
- Save time
- No need to research safe products
- Save money
- DIY is almost always less expensive!
- Excellent results
- Personal testimony, but yes, my house is clean!
- Eco-friendly
- The world is an eco-system, it’s important to not harm any of the chains that link everything together
- Sustainable
- Reduce plastic waste with products like glass spray bottles
Amber Glass Spray Bottles
Glass spray bottles are a must-have for anyone who makes their own homemade cleaning products. You’ll definitely want to use glass over plastic, so that plastic doesn’t leech into your cleaning solutions over time. Also, the amber glass is great for anyone who uses essential oils as a means to protect your essentials from degradation over time. These bottles are well-made, meaning you won’t have to keep buying them!
Benefits of a Homemade Dusting Spray

As much as I actually enjoy the satisfaction that I get from my weekly cleaning routine, I don’t exactly enjoy seeing my hard work ruined after just a few days. Even though my homemade all-purpose cleaners work great, there are some surfaces that need a little extra attention.
This is where my homemade dusting spray comes in handy. Very similar recipe to my all-purpose cleaner without vinegar, this dusting spray has the added benefit of olive oil. The olive oil gives it a little bit of an edge by leaving behind a slightly more coated and slicker surface that helps to repel dust better. Additionally, the extra shine can’t be beat!

Cost-Benefit Analysis

As always, I love that I continue to come across new brands offering non-toxic solutions for household cleaning needs. For this cost-benefit analysis, I will be comparing my homemade dusting spray to Norse Naturals All-Natural Dusting Spray.
As of April 2026 in Tennessee:
Homemade Dusting Spray
2 cups water
- FREE
2 tbsp olive oil (Simply Nature Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil)
- $7.25 for 16.9 fl oz bottle
- 16.9 fl oz = 33.8 tbsp
- $7.25 % 33.8 = $0.21 per tbsp
- 2 tbsp = $0.42
2 tbsp liquid castile soap
- $32.49 for 32oz bottle + 32oz refill
- 64 fl oz = 128 tbsp
- 128 tbsp % 2 tbsp = 64 tbsp
- $32.49 % 64 tbsp = $0.51
- 2 tbsp of liquid castile soap = $0.51
30 drops lemon essential oil
- 1oz bottle = $15.00
- 1oz bottle = approx. 600 drops
- $15.00 % 600 = $0.025/drop
- 30 drops = $0.75
Total Per 16oz Bottle: $1.68
Norse Naturals All-Natural Dusting Spray (find here)
- $8.49 for 8oz
- $16.98 for 16oz
Ingredients: distilled water, vinegar, olive oil and lemongrass therapeutic grade essential oil
By far, this is one of the best ingredients lists you will come across when shopping for household cleaners. 100% approve! The only downside, besides being more expensive, is that the Norse Naturals website seems to be the only place to order their products. I have not seen them in any of my local stores, and they are not listed on Amazon (maybe that’s a good thing?).
If you are not a DIY person, this product may be right up your alley!
